In this part 4 of my watersheds of Ontario series, I’m responding to some new watershed requests.
The first watershed, shown below, is the immense watershed of the Ottawa River. The Headwaters of the Ottawa River lie in both Ontario and Quebec, with the Ottawa River forming the provincial boundary from the St. Lawrence (where the Ottawa River discharges) to Lake Temiskaming. From Lake Temiskaming, the Ottawa River continues upriver to the east into the province of Quebec.
The Ottawa River is over 1,200 kilometers long and its watershed covers an area of over 146,000 square kilometers.
The second watershed is the Mississippi River watershed in eastern Ontario. This watershed is actually a subwatershed of the Ottawa River watershed shown above. The Mississippi River starts its journey near Bon Echo Provincial Park and flows east towards Mississippi Lake before turning north towards Mississippi Mills on its journey to the Ottawa River. It discharges into the Ottawa River just east of Arnprior, Ontario.
The third and final watershed is that of the Maitland River, in southwestern Ontario. The Maitland River flows east to west and has its headwaters near the small towns of Teviotdale and Palmerston. The Maitland River flows into Lake Huron in the town of Goderich, Ontario.
When I first looked at the Maitland River watershed, I was reminded of the wing of a butterfly, so I felt compelled to mirror the imag. See below! It actually looks more like a bat!
If you have a specific request or a favourite watershed, feel free to water-drop it in the comments below and I’ll draw it up! I now have all the data for the province of Quebec (thanks to the visualization of the Ottawa River watershed), so I’ll be showing some of those watersheds soon.

Gracias Steve I love what you are doing with the watershed visuals
I'm preparing a new post about the kaweah river basin in the southern San Joaquin valley in California and was wondering if you could draw it for me to include it in the post early next year
Gracias ricardo
